Nursing as a profession goes back, before Florence Nightingale. In earlier times, caregiving was considered as an informal, nursing role as either fulfilled by family or some religious figures. In ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, women were performing the duties of providing basic care to the sick and wounded individual but at that time these duties was not considered as formal profession.

During that time, healthcare system was basically base on the traditional knowledge, herbal remedies and sometimes was influenced by spiritual practices. The nurses were tasked to perform the task of caregivers, performing tasks like feeding, bathing and also comforting the sick. With no formal training or having any medicinal experienced, the nurses tends to learn from their experiences.

In ancient Greece the nursing role was more like associated with healing temple, where priestess and women were attending the sick and elderly. While in Rome, women were expected to provide care for soldiers and the sick and were required to work in military hospitals.

Florence Nightingale and the Birth of Modern Nursing

Florence Nightingale had laid the foundation for modern nursing. It was her work especially in Crimean War during mid 19 century, brings transformation in both nursing practice as well as public perception towards healthcare sector. She was tasked with looking after the British soldiers. At that time, military hospitals were often overcrowded and unhygienic which was leading the increase of high death rate from the infectious diseases. Witnessing the condition of hospital and increase death rates, she introduce sanitation reforms by introducing cleaner environments, improve ventilations and also better food and water resources. Florence Nightingale also established the first formal training program for nurses and founded the Nightingale Training School of Nurses in 1860 at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London which became the model for nursing education worldwide. It was her belief in importance of education and professionalism which led to the establishment of structured standards for nursing, elevating it from a role of unskilled caregiving to a respected profession.

By 20th century, nursing practices were evolved into the formal profession which shaped during the world war 1 and 2 both, where nurses were in frontline and were giving care to those who were in need from soldiers to civilians. These conflicts drives the need for skilled care and led to the greater respect and recognition for the nurses. Hospital based trainings were increased, ensuring the structured clinical education. Additionally, professional organizations like the ANA (American Nursing Association) and ICN (International Council for Nurses) emerged, promoting education, standards, and nurses’ rights laying the foundation for modern nursing.

The Present: Nursing in the 21st Century

Education and Specialization: Modern nursing are now required to have experience in specialized fields and also to be academic smart. For the person who is interested in joining the nursing profession, he/she has to pursue for the advanced degrees like Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) for gaining leadership and also clinical expertise. Specializations in the fields like ICU, paediatrics, geriatrics, oncology and emergency care allows nurses to provide more focused and expert care. Roles like nurse practitioners and anaesthetist often serve as the primary healthcare providers which reflects nurse’s important role in modern healthcare sector.

Role in Modern Healthcare Systems: Nurses are not only assisting but are also making the important decisions and also performing the role in patient advocacy. Nurse are playing important role in identifying the changes in the patient conditions, initiating interventions and ensuring ethical and compassionate care are given to the patients. They perform many roles from coordinating care to serving as main communication point.

Technology in Nursing Practice: Technology has revolutionized the nursing practice which enhance the efficiency and also look after the patient outcomes. The tools like Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to improve care coordination while telehealth enables remote consultations. Wearable tech helps nurses monitor patients’ vital signs in real-time. Robotics and AI are also emerging, assisting with tasks like medication delivery and diagnostics, reducing physical strain on nurses and freeing up more time for patient care.

Global Recognition and Challenges: Like many professions like truck drivers, nursing profession gained the recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic, where nurses were working unconditionally under huge pressure where they have to take care of their health as well as those who are suffering from the virus. Nurses proven themselves to be hero during the pandemic time.

Many European countries are facing nursing shortages and are actively recruiting skilled nurses, particularly from countries like India, with the help of agencies like Skillbee.
